Barcelona bustles with Mediterranean life.

Its vibrant and colourful history is apparent in the Gothic quarter, in its varied architecture and in the city’s magnificent art collections and museums. The cruise ship docks at the end of La Rambla, the main pedestrian street in Barcelona and probably its best known. Like many aspects of life in Spain the origins of its name are Moorish, and La Rambla comes from the Arabic, meaning sandy riverbed.

The Walking Tour starts at the Christopher Columbus monument at the seafront, and guides you up the Rambla as it changes its name: La Rambla, Rambla de Santa Monica, Rambla de les Flors ... As we go, we will explain the monuments, point out the local markets, and show you the Gothic quarter with the cathedral and palaces that have survived the ages. We will tell you about the Roman and Jewish history of this part of town, and we won't forget to point out special boutiques! Barcelona has several great traditions and you'll hear some of the fascinating stories of those "fiestas". Don't forget to drink from the fountain of Canaletes, at the top of La Rambla near Plaça de Catalunya. It is said that he who drinks from the fountain will fall in love with the city and is certain to return.

No tour of Barcelona would be complete without Gaudí; Antonio Gaudí is probably the most famous of the Modernist architects, and he made Barcelona his own. We will take you to his breath-taking Church of the Holy Family, or Sagrada Familia, as well as Casa Battlò and La Pedrera.

Montjuïc, or Jewish Mountain, is another area that we visit on our tour. Great museums, beautiful gardens and a view 300 metres directly above Barcelona make this area particularly worthwhile. And beneath the Mountain, we add a stroll along the waterfront to the 18th century quarter of La Barceloneta, or Little Barcelona, the former fishing village on a narrow strip of land between the harbour and the sea.

In the North-West part of the city is the Parc Güell, an amazing and playful creation Gaudí designed. Further to the west we point out the Monastery de Pedralbes and the Palau de Pedralbes. Both are worth a visit - and if you have spare time, take the Blue Tram up the hill of Tibidabo. You can walk the first part of the tour in a couple of hours, covering the Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter, the Picasso Museum, and the other stops nearby. Combined with the sea-front itinerary, it might take you half a day. But if you have more time to explore this magnificent Mediterranean jewel, a full day allows you to add the Montjuïc and Parc Güell as well.
