Jerusalem is unique. Surrounded by mountains, it rises 750 metres above sea level, on the ridge of Israel's water divide. Ancient, and sacred to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the city is a complex mixture of sounds and smells, peoples and cultures.
In the Diaspora, Jews have always prayed “Next Year in Jerusalem”. In Jewish tradition, the Dome of the Rock is built directly above the foundation stone of the world, the site of the beginning of creation, and therefore the centre of the world. For Christians, Jerusalem is the crucible of Christianity; where Jesus walked and taught, the site of his passion, death and resurrection. Muslims believe that the prophet Mohamed ascended to heaven from the Temple Mount; and in Islam only Mecca and Medina are accorded greater importance.
We have distilled a lifetime of experience in Jerusalem into just 75 minutes and 20 key sites, all marked on our hand-drawn map. With histories piled onto pre-histories, we point out for you the hidden gems as well as the high masterpieces of the Old City. We re-live anecdotes about the city and its peoples, about those that built Jerusalem, and those bent on destroying it.
'Mark Twain, the American journalist and author,
visited Jerusalem in 1867. On his visit to the sixth
Station on the Via Dolorosa, he wrote:
“The strangest thing about the incident that
has made her name so famous is that when she
wiped the perspiration away, the print of the
Saviour's face remained upon the handkerchief,
a perfect portrait, and so remains unto
this day. We knew this, because we saw this
handkerchief in a cathedral in Paris, in another
in Spain, and in two others in Italy. In the
Milan cathedral it costs five francs to see it, and at
St Peter's, at Rome, it is almost impossible to
see it at any price. No tradition is so amply verified
as this of St Veronica and her handkerchief”.'
