Imperial War Museum introduces MediaPackers™ to its First World War Galleries

Imperial War Museum London has introduced Imagineear MediaPackers™ to its First World War Galleries. The free audio guides have been created to enrich blind and partially sighted visitors’ experience in the galleries.

The equipment and content are both perfect for blind and partially sighted visitors. The small, light MediaPacker™ device has raised buttons, making it easy to navigate and use. The content was created by VocalEyes, a nationwide audio description service providing access to the arts for blind and partially sighted people. It not only communicates key information about the exhibition, but also gives practical information to help with orientation, along with evocative descriptions of the objects.

It is the first self-guided tour for blind and partially sighted visitors that has been created for the First World War Galleries. It adds to the monthly live audio descriptive tour and large print, downloadable e-book also aimed at this audience. The launch of the audioguide builds on the impressive work already undertaken for the new First World War Galleries.

The ground-breaking new galleries opened last year to coincide with the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. They are three times larger than the previous galleries dedicated to the First World War and contain an impressive 1,300 objects, which range from weapons to keepsakes.

Clare Cooper-Hammond, UK Managing Director of Imagineear, says: “We enjoy working with a number of organisations on their resources for blind and partially sighted visitors and are thrilled that this now includes the Imperial War Museum. Providing MediaPackers™ for the First World War Galleries is something that we hope will really improve blind and partially sighted visitors’ experience of the exhibition. We look forward to continuing to work with the Imperial War Museum as they deliver more outstanding engagement materials for visitors with special access requirements in the future.”
