“For several days,” Grieg’s wife wrote, “he went about in a nervous, restless state, in great doubts…” The great Norwegian poet and playwright Ibsen had approached Grieg to compose  a musical accompaniment for his play Peer Gynt, but the composer was uncertain.  Fortunately, he eventually overcame his reluctance and completed 22 pieces in all.

Grieg later extracted two suites of 4 movements each, which are known today as the Peer Gynt Suites 1 and 2.  They are just 2 of the 17 works, 79 audio tracks, and more than 8 hours of great music from the Late Romantic Period that form this compilation
