“The themes are terrific – inspired, God-given.  I don’t think there’s been such an inspired melodist on this earth since Tchaikovsky” wrote Leonard Bernstein in 1955 about George Gershwin and his Rhapsody in Blue.  It was music to Gershwin’s ears.  He had achieved fame and fortune in the world of popular song, but craved this recognition as a classical composer, once even asking Maurice Ravel for composition lessons.  The French composer enquired of Gershwin how much he earned from song writing.  On hearing the reply, Ravel suggested that perhaps he should be the one taking lessons from Gershwin!

The Rhapsody in Blue, with its companion An American in Paris, are just 2 of 92 tracks in this compilation of great music from the Modern Period.  Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto is included as sheet music, in a study version for cello and piano, the latter replacing the whole orchestra in the recording in this compilation.
