“You’ll never know how the likes of us feel when we hear the tramp of a giant like Beethoven behind us”, Johannes Brahms once said.  It took him well over a decade to complete his first symphony.  And even then, it was hard to escape Beethoven’s shadow, the conductor Hans von Bülow going so far as to refer to the symphony the year after its premiere as "Beethoven's Tenth".As was customary amongst composers, Brahms  dedicated many works to musicians.  His only violin concerto, completed 8 year before his death, is dedicated to a good friend and violin player, Joseph Joachim. 

It is one of 23 works included in this compilation, which comprises in total 71 tracks playing more than 8 hours of great music from the Romantic Period.
