Script Writing in Puerto Rico

Two of the Imagineear team’s mainstays, Senior Project Manager Emma Thompson and Creative Lead Writer Marion McAuley, have just returned from Puerto Rico where they had the challenge of scripting content on the hoof and against the clock for a self-guided visitor tour of two important fortresses – Castillo San Cristóbal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro, known as El Morro.

Construction of El Morro began over 400 years ago, on orders from Charles V King of Spain, to defend the harbour entrance from seaborne enemies. Neighbouring Castillo San Cristóbal was then built to protect the city of San Juan from land-based attacks.

The San Juan National Historic Site is the largest fortification built in the New World sprawling over 27 acres and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

With limited time of a day at each castle, writing on the spot was a challenge that Emma and Marion rose to, creating workable scripts while touring each site, absorbing salient details from the guides and editing as they wrote.

‘It was an exhilarating experience,” said Emma Thompson, who is project managing the tour productions. “Understanding the scope, the layout of the castles, planning the navigation, photographing images for content screens, absorbing the history, highlights and legends while writing against the clock requires a different sort of discipline than more usual scripting requirements. Working closely with The Friends of San Juan National Historic Site and the US National Parks Service, we managed to do this within the designated window while maintaining our high quality standard.”

The separate self-guided tours of each castle will be produced in Spanish and English and loaded onto Imagineear’s own MPi™ touch screen devices.
