Imagineear creates innovative mobile app and new content for English Heritage’s iconic heritage site, Stonehenge
Imagineear was awarded a prestigious public tender by English Heritage, to augment the visitor experience with the creation of a new digital mobile app for one of the UK’s most visited tourist attractions, Stonehenge. An iconic prehistoric monument, Stonehenge is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting 1.6 million visitors from around the world every year.
English Heritage sought to work with a dynamic and innovative agency to help them achieve their strategic objective: to transition from a traditional on-site audio tour to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model for their flagship site. They were looking to help visitors understand and enjoy Stonehenge as they move around the site – from the exhibition spaces and Neolithic houses, through the landscape and to the stone circle, interacting with interpretive content as they explore.
In partnership with the English Heritage team, Imagineear also produced new audiovisual content in 12 languages which feature in the app.
Imagineear designed and developed an interactive navigational app, that will appeal to Stonehenge’s diverse range of visitors and provide an easy means of accessing mobile multimedia content via the innovative use of QR codes, location-based triggering and interactive maps.
Imagineear also assisted English Heritage in an advisory capacity, drawing from its extensive experience of working with key heritage, cultural and sports venues worldwide. Working in close partnership, Imagineear evaluated a variety of potential user journeys and tour types, taking into account the seasonality of Stonehenge as an outdoor attraction and the operational challenges posed by exposure to different weather conditions.
In addition to the design and build of the bespoke English Heritage app, Imagineear provided a full programme of iterative user testing and evaluation.
“We are delighted to be working with the English Heritage team on this exciting project and have really enjoyed the opportunity to reimagine the visitor experience at Stonehenge” said Clare Cooper-Hammond, Managing Director at Imagineear Ltd. “Our comprehensive and flexible TourBuilder Plus™ platform allowed us to provide English Heritage with full creative and operational flexibility from day one. This meant the opportunity to preview and approve content design efficiently in real time, and to adjust during the app build, testing and prototyping phases, all the way through to launch, ongoing app management and future development capabilities.”
Jennifer Davies, English Heritage’s Head of Historic Properties for Stonehenge said, “We are so excited to have launched our new audio app. It’s a great addition to the visitor experience and a fantastic tool for our operational and interpretation teams too. We can already see that visitors are really enjoying the extra content and how easy it is to use on their phones, and I know that the team are really looking forward to being able to update easily when needed.”
English Heritage cares for over 400 historic buildings, monuments and sites – from world-famous prehistoric sites to grand medieval castles, from Roman forts on the edges of the empire to a Cold War bunker. Through these, we bring the story of England to life for over 10 million people each year. Registered charity no. 1140351 www.english-heritage.org.uk
